Beacon Credit Union is aware of a text phishing scam (known as smishing) sent to Credit Union members. The texts typically contain an urgent message warning about unusual activity on an account or an account being restricted with a URL link to verify information to regain access.  DO NOT RESPOND OR CLICK ON THE LINK.

Here are some tips to help keep you from being a victim. Be suspicious of any text that:

  1. Comes from an unknown number, telling you there is a problem with your account.
  2. Asks you for your personal, confidential information. This includes your online banking username, password, one-time passcodes, Social Security number, account number, debit or credit card number, PIN or CVV.
  3. Uses scare tactics or claims to be “urgent,” requiring you act immediately
  4. Asks you to transfer money via a link in the message

What to do:

  1. Do not respond to the text or click on links within the message. Even writing STOP will let the scammer know your number is genuine, and they may sell your number to other scammers, making the problem worse.

If you are ever in doubt, please contact Beacon Credit Union at (800) 762-3136 to verify a message’s legitimacy.
