A recent scam that is circulating around is receiving a text claiming there was an unusual login from Traverse City (or another unfamiliar location). The message may ask you to respond “Yes” or “No” to confirm whether the login was yours.
If you respond “No,” the scam may continue with another text asking you to enter your username to “confirm your identity” and then type “cancel” back. It may then ask for your password.
This is a major warning sign. Legitimate organizations should not ask you to provide your password by replying to an unsolicited text message.
What to look out for:
- Unexpected login or security alerts you didn’t initiate.
- Requests for your username, password, verification codes, or other sensitive information.
- Instructions to reply to the text to “cancel” or secure your account.
- Urgent language designed to make you act without thinking.
What to do: Do not provide your username, password, or security codes, and don’t click links or continue the text conversation. Instead, contact the organization through a trusted phone number or official website/app that you already know is legitimate. If you entered your password, change it immediately through the official site or app and notify the organization.
