What to do if you have a EMV Card (chip card) and the merchant’s card reader isn’t working.
The holiday season is the busiest time for retailers and for you, the holiday shopper. EMV cards, such as your Beacon Visa Debit Card* adds a layer of security to protect you from fraud. But what happens if the merchant’s chip reader is not working correctly or if the merchant hasn’t enabled the reader as of yet? Well, have no fear, EMV cards will also work by swiping them exactly like conventional non-chip cards.
This holiday season, Beacon Credit Union – on our member’s behalf, have initiated the following rule to help avoid unnecessary fraud and inconvenience that members could experience if their accounts are compromised:
If your card is an EMV card and being presented at a merchant with chip enabled technology and the chip fails for some reason the member will be required to
swipe and use their PIN to complete the transactions.
If your card is not an EMV card, you can complete signature and PIN based transactions by swiping.
Wishing you a happy and safe holiday season!
*Not all of debit card holders have EMV chip cards, Beacon Credit Union will be issuing EMV cards on your renewal date.
