Malware Awareness Reminder

Malware Awareness Reminder

A reminder to all members about the potential malware dangers that come from playing or downloading online games. Once your computer has been affected by malware, it can utilize your internet browsing history to disguise malware advertisements as legitimate ads from websites you frequent and trust. One of our members recently had malware that tried to mimic Beacon's website. When the member went to Beacon's website, they encountered the pop up box you'll see below.

At first glance, this pop up appears to be connected with Beacon - but we have drawn arrows pointing to the small box at the bottom of the screen identifying that this ad is not affiliated with Beacon Credit Union at all, but has instead been generated by the website "Arcade Candy." You will also notice the disclosure above the arrows that specifically states "This page is neither affiliated nor sponsored by Beaconcu.org."

This is an isolated incident that only affected one member. It was in no way caused by Beacon or by our website. Nothing about the security of the Beacon Credit Union website has been compromised and there is nothing about this incident that should cause our membership to be concerned about using our website.

This is simply a reminder to always be cautious with your internet activities. You should never download anything unless you are 100% positive that it is from a trusted source and you should always make sure that your computer's virus and malware protection is current and up-to-date.

Beacon does not use pop-up advertisements such as this on our website.
